I recommend "Claiming Disability: Knowledge and Identity" by Simi Linton for anyne who wants a thorough read about disability studies.
ISBN 0-8147-5133-4 New York University Press
Simi Linton, in intelligent but accessible words puts a clear picture to disability, the study of it, what the community is about and why and where we are headed. I took a pen to underline those phrases I want to go back to, to remember, to contemplate, and it seems the whole book is underlined! Linton holds no punches, misses no tricks. She is able to communicate information and theories and thoughts we often have in our minds but can't quite articulate. Turn the page - voila! she's explained it.
