I think people don't know what to do about helping a person using crutches except perhaps to help reach or hold something in a store. Also, the crutches would take more time to help someone with and if help is offered (in my experience, anyway) it's meant to be truly a help but please make it quick!
We are in the fast food, quick fix, society that depends on speed. In my own case, if anyone tells me to "hurry up" they're out-the-door with a bruise on their butt.
