AmeriCorps Global Depot Team Project
October 2001 - September 2002

The VSA AmeriCorps Global Depot Team provides a unique opportunity for members with and without disabilities to serve together in educating the community about recycling using the performing and visual arts.  Members collaborate on the operation of an art recycling center, develop and produce crafts using recycled materials, and build public awareness about the importance of the environment through hands-on arts activities in schools and other settings for children and adults of all ages and abilities.

Members for the 2001-2002 VSA AmeriCorps Global Depot Team are currently being recruited to begin October 1, 2001.   Six full-time members will complete a total of 1,700 hours of service during the year, and fourteen part-time members will complete 300 hours of service.  Each member will receive a stipend ($10,200 full-time, $1,620 part-time) and be eligible for the AmeriCorps education benefit at the completion of their term of service.  Full-time members receive health insurance coverage during their term of service.

VSA arts of New Mexico looks forward to recruiting members with experience in the arts, education, environmental issues, disability issues and/or a strong interest and enthusiasm for this project   To apply, submit your resume along with the standard AmeriCorps application form to the address below.  If you have any questions e-mail  Deborah Mashibini [email protected].

Global Depot Studio Visits
Come visit the Global Depot Recycle Art Studio!

The Global Depot Recycle Art Studio is hosting hands-on art activities for groups of 5-10 participants, weekdays between 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM. The cost is $2.00 per person. The Studio is part of VSA arts of New Mexico's Enabled Arts Center, a day studio for persons with and without disabilities, operating Monday through Friday at 2015-2017 Yale Blvd. S.E. Classroom presentations are also available in schools and community centers to accommodate larger groups.

The Global Depot Recycle Art Studio was one of the most popular attractions in the Museum of International Folk Arts' Recycled, Reseen Exhibit. In January, 1998, the International Folk Art Foundation donated the Depot to VSA New Mexico. We have created a new home for it at the Enabled Arts Center, supported in part by the City of Albuquerque's Keep Albuquerque Beautiful Program and the Albuquerque Community Foundation.

The goals of the studio are:

  • To give children and adults the opportunity to learn about our environment by creating recycled art.
  • To create earth-friendly products, including cards, stationery, jewelry, sculpture and folk art, to be sold through our on-site Very Special Arts Gallery, citywide retail outlets, and arts and crafts fairs such as the Weems Artfest. Sales proceeds benefit the artists and the continuation of the program.
  • To develop an employment training program for persons with disabilities who help teach the educational programs, create works for sale, and sort recycle materials.
