VSA is thrilled to welcome Orlando Sedillo as President; Robert Gutierrez, Vice President; Janet Saiers, Secretary; and Katherine Rowe, Trasurer. Other members include Rebecca DuMond, Bill Evans, William H. Johnson, Frank McCulloch, Rebecca Plutino, Steven Slusher, Richard Towne, Anna Marie Ulibarri and Michelle Welby. Concha Ortiz y Pino de Kleven continues to serve as an emeritus/ex officio member.
Gallery 211 in Gallup features Contemporary Work
Gallery 211, located in the heart of Gallup’s art district, features the work of contemporary Native American artists from throughout the southwest. Rossi Bright, of Gallery 211, explains: “Gallery 211 welcomes work by Native American artists working in contemporary forms. The Gallery offers a place for contemporary work in an area (Gallup) that offers many outlets for traditional Native American art. We showcase several Native Americans at this gallery doing contemporary work. This month our solo exhibit is dedicated to the work of a young Navajo painter who is developing his own form of expression reflective of his unique realm of experiences. We have over 100 outlets for traditional Native American arts here, yet only two galleries (ours being one) that offer Native Americans, who wish to express themselves in a more contemporary way, a place to show their work.” Rossi notes “There are many different kinds of gallery venues out there, and more need to be developed, and artists can be on the forefront of helping to create these venues.” This makes the gallery unique among the many venues for traditional Native Art. This gallery is also set apart because it is owned and operated by the DSI, a service agency for people with developmental disabilities. Work by artists receiving services through DSI is often featured in Gallery 211 exhibits. If you go to Gallup, make sure you stop by. For more information call 505-722-5315. Barbara J. McKee opens her first book-length collection of work. read more VSA North Fourth Art Center Staff Artist Featured in Dinosaur Stompede A star spangled entry in Dinosaur Stompede was a winner for VSA staff artist-teacher Susan Buckrey. Ms. Buckrey's red, white and blue dinosaur, "American Spirit," garnered the People's Choice Award in the New Mexico Museum of Natural History Foundation fundraiser. Her patriotic Pentaceratops was co-sponsored by Wendy's and Cliff's Amusement Park, where it will be on display throughout the summer.
