Festival
del Camino Real Come
to Festival del Camino Real, a celebration of the arts and
culture of the North Valley and the disability community! The first
annual Festival del Camino Real will take place at the VSA arts
Center of New Mexico, 4904 Fourth Street NW, along both the historic New
Mexico Route 66 and the Camino Real.
Neighborhood
success story and well-known artist Edward Gonzales will serve as the
Honorary Chairperson of the Festival, which is co-sponsored by the newly
formed North Fourth/ Camino Real Merchants Association.
Festival
del Camino Real will bring together community members of all ages,
representing diverse cultural backgrounds, to celebrate the past,
present and future of North Fourth. There will be an array of free
hands-on arts activities, demonstrations by local talent, free food and
entertainment.
A
free disability theatre presentation by guest artist David Roche, “The
Church of 80% Sincerity” will be presented at 2:00 pm.
In his “brilliantly funny yet moving and mesmerizing one man
show,” David Roche gives voice to all who have been hidden in the
shadows, regardless of their diversity. This is a performance you will
not want to miss.
The
Festival also will include an arts and crafts fair featuring artists
with disabilities and community artists whose work reflects the diverse
cultures of the North Valley. The Disability Culture Exhibit will open
in the VSA gallery, featuring work by Alyce Frank, Dara McLaughlin and
Enabled Studio Arts apprentice artists.
But
that’s not all! The Festival will provide entertainment by Los Reyes
de Alburquerque, Indigo Moon and Buen Viaje, a free professional
development workshop for emerging artists, and feature author Mary Montaño,
who will be on hand to sign her new book, “Tradiciones Nuevomexicanas.”
