VSA ENABLED STUDIO ARTS

Nurturing creative potential
A VSA arts of New Mexico Core Program

VSA Enabled Studio Arts is a year-round studio arts program offering instruction, vocational training, community inclusion, and apprenticeship opportunities for individuals with disabilities, age 14 and older.

The program, based at the VSA arts Center of New Mexico, provides a supportive environment for creative exploration and a sense of community for emerging artists.  Enabled is a visible demonstration of VSA’s philosophy that every individual, regardless of the cause, severity, or label placed on their disability, has the potential for creative growth.

More than 50 classes in the visual, performing, technology, and literary arts are offered throughout the week.  Arts-related work experiences complement courses that encourage the development of original creative work.  Interest, rather than previous experience, is the main criteria for admission.

Enabled Studio Arts can accommodate sixty full-time apprentice artists.  Highly skilled Artist/Teachers implement the artistic curriculum and Training Instructors provide the supports needed by individual apprentice artists.  Fees are based on rates set by the Medicaid Developmental Disabilities Waiver program and contracts with ARCA, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), and other agencies.   Private pay arrangements are also available.  Individuals and businesses interested in providing scholarship assistance are urged to send tax-deductible contributions to the Damon Keeswood Native American Scholarship Fund and the Enabled Scholarship Fund.

Program hours are 9 AM – 3 PM, Monday through Friday.  Tours are available by appointment.

"I didn't know I had talent until I started at VSA.  I didn't paint or write when I was a child - it was a big surprise.  Now, I'm an artist and a writer.  My life has changed a lot."
-Marc Frye, Enabled apprentice artist
