An International, Juried Exhibition of Art and Fine Crafts Featuring Artists with Disabilities

Eligibility and Terms

Open to artists with physical and mental disabilities. Only work executed after the onset of disability or injury is eligible. All works must be for sale. Works must be original and include:     

Works on paper, Works on canvas or board, Sculpture, Jewelry,Photography, Pottery, Fabric art, Other crafts

Work must not exceed maximum UPS shipping size of 130 inches, measured as follows: measure length around all four sides plus one additional long side. 

$6,000 in Prizes to be Awarded

All work will be eligible for prizes ranging from $500 to $50, selected by a distinguished panel of jurors. 

Entering the Show

Work will be submitted in two steps:

Slides - Slides must be received by December 20 and are to be mailed to:

Actual work - You will receive detailed information after the slide jurying. Shipped work must be sent for arrival at the Medical Center between February 10-13.  In person deliveries will be accepted at the Medical Center by appointment only.                              

Slide Requirements

On the side of the slide the work should be viewed from, write:

1. your name, title of work, date of completion

2. medium, size (height, width, depth)

3. indicate "top" with arrow 

University Medical Center  cannot be held responsible for pieces lost or damaged during shipping; therefore, artists should pack their work securely and insure all work shipped. 

ART FIRST! is organized under the direction of Lois Levy, who created and directed Art Ability for Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital until 2002, and oversaw the exhibition at MossRehab from 1979 until 1994.

Preliminary Review by Slides

Slides of up to 6 works may be submitted for preliminary review.  Sculptors may submit two views of each work. Slides must be sent with entry forms and Jury Action Report from this mailing. Please send a self-addressed stamped envelope. Slides of accepted work will be retained for duration of exhibition by University Medical Center at Princeton, when they will be returned. 

Please Note: Acceptance of a work based on slides does not guarantee inclusion.  The jury reserves the right to final selection when viewing actual work.  Selling prices cannot be raised after work is accepted in the slide jurying process. 

Sales & Liability

Work will be insured at the stated value. Coverage will begin from the date of receipt to the date of return.  University Medical Center at Princeton will retain a 20% commission on all sales of exhibiting work, multiples, and those commissioned as a result of the show.

DISABLED ARTISTS ANNUAL JURIED EXHIBITION In an effort to
fulfill its mission to improve the lives of people with disabilities,
the gallery collects artwork created exclusively by artists with
disabilities from its annual exhibition. By exhibiting the collection
throughout the hospital, we hope the work will inspire patients and
visitors alike to reach beyond limitations and encourage the creative
spirit in everyone. It is open to artists, regardless of experience or
formal training who are dealing with a physical disability. There are
no entry fees. All work considered, must be available for sale. Art
must be original or numbered limited fine art prints in editions of 50
or less.  Eligible forms include painting, drawings, mixed media,
ceramic, sculpture, photographs and fabric arts. Exhibition dates May
13 - May 28, 2004, with possibilities for the show to travel. Requests
for additional information and to receive a formal call-for-entry

Exhibit description:
This exhibit will feature artist's visual and poetic perspectives on their personal relationship to a political world now and in the past. This exhibit will survey political art from the past and in the present, including traditional and nontraditional graffiti expression.

Out of the Ordinary: A Performance Event Showcasing Outstanding New Mexico Artists with Disabilities

WHAT: Performing arts event featuring performing artists with disabilities from around the state 

WHERE: Small Theatre at the Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque 

WHEN: Audition Deadline: January 16, 2004

Event: Thursday, February 12, 7–9 pm 

Out of the Ordinary, a performance event showcasing outstanding New Mexico performing artists with disabilities will take place in Albuquerque at the Hispanic Cultural Center on Thursday, February 12, from 7-9 pm. Audition deadline is January 16, 2004. The Harwood Art Center and VSA North Fourth Art Center Present:  

WHAT: 

All As One, Poetry By and For New Mexicans 

This is a collaboration between two arts organizations, both with a history of literary publication.  The Harwood Art Center’s Harwood Review has become a respected literary publication presenting the work of some of New Mexico’s most renowned poets.  VSA’s Enabled Writer included six editions and a “Best Of The Enabled Writer” featuring the work of professional and emerging New Mexico writers with disabilities. 

WHO:

Open to all New Mexico poets.  Poets from throughout the state are invited to submit work for this collaborative publication featuring work by writers with and without disabilities. 

WHEN:

All as One is scheduled to be distributed (5,000 copies) in conjunction with National Poetry Month, April 2004. 

Submission deadline, January 31, 2004. 

HOW/WHERE:

All submissions must be typed.  No length or subject restrictions.  Poets may submit more than one poem for consideration.  Selections will be made by a committee of local writers.
